Panto Dream Team?

In a British poll recently conducted by MSN the following celebrities were nominated as perfect casting for a traditional British panto:

Cheryl Cole won 35% of the vote to play Snow White beating Susan Boyle, Myleene Klass, Alesha Dixon, Kym Marsh, Dannii Minogue, Katie Price and Victoria Beckham for the part

Peter Andre had a 36% vote to play her Prince Charming ahead of Orlando Bloom, David Beckham, Robert Pattinson, Ricky Whittle, Piers Morgan, Ray Quinn and his ex Katie Price's new boyfriend Alex Reid - who only received 1%

Simon Cowell was the favourite to star as a panto villain with 43% of the vote beating off opposition including Gordon Ramsay, Jack Nicholson, Gordon Brown, Ray Winstone, Lord Alan Sugar, David Hasselhoff, Duncan Bannatyne and Sir Ian McKellen.

Victoria Beckham was voted as the best Wicked Witch …

No surprises there then and all a bit predictable. The only problem is there’s not a panto producer in the land who could afford to pay the salary bill for this lot!

Why is Pammy doing Panto?

If you were wondering why Ms Anderson is appearing from a lamp in Aladdin this Christmas then wonder no more as she is millions of dollars in debt following renovations to her home in Malibu which is not yet finished.

At the moment she is living in a trailer park with her boyfriend while being sued by a number of construction companies over unpaid bills. Pammy is blaming the recession and some poor investments adding "I'm a little girl with two kids - how could you screw me?"

Apparently she cries every time she visits the house sad says: "I'm going to sell it. I hate it. People commit suicide over constructions. Relationships break down over constructions and I can see why. It rips your heart out."

Maybe she should cut down a bit – after all is gold and platinum tiling really necessary?

She has a number of money raising projects in the UK including a show called  Pamela Anderson : At Home with Joe, the Christmas panto Aladdin and also a reality show is in the pipeline.

La Cage Aux Folles UK Tour Cancelled

The La Cage Aux Folles tour of the UK has been cancelled due to a lack of "suitable stars."  The tour of the Menier Chocolate Factory's production was scheduled to start in February 2010.

Keira Knightley to star in new film of My Fair Lady

Keira Knightley has beaten Scarlett Johansson to land the part of the Cockney flower seller Eliza Doolittle in a new film adaptation of My Fair Lady. The 24-year-old actress will star in the film which is being directed by Joe Wright.  This is the role played by Audrey Hepburn in the 1964 film.

Sir Cameron Mackintosh, who is producing the film with Duncan Kenworthy, has been playing his casting cards to his chest and would only say “I have two actresses as potential Elizas - one British, the other American. You would know their names, but I’m not letting on”.  But it now seems that Keira has won the part.

Emma Thompson is writing the film’s script and rumour has it that Daniel Craig is being approached to play Professor Henry Higgins (originally played by Rex Harrison).

Jordan and Cage Fighter in Competition with La Cage Aux Folles

Katie Price (aka Jordan) was signing books in Selfridge yesterday, and just for a change posed for some photos with her boyfriend Alex Reid (plus her dressage coach Andrew Gould, her brother Daniel Price and best friend Phil Turner). Nothing new in that I know - but this time they were all dressed in drag and wearing full make up.

Not a pretty sight as you can see from the photo on the left!

They then went to the popular gay haunt Balans in Soho still wearing full slap but had at least changed into something more comfortable.

Some would say they needn’t have bothered as they then headed for Playhouse Theatre to watch the stage production La Cage Aux Folles where their dresses would have gone down a treat!

Glamorous canine contenders strutted their stuff on the catwalk and were projected on to a giant screen for all to see. Top prizes are awarded to the dogs whose costumes best illustrated Times Square’s past or present - which includes paying tribute to the new crop of Broadway shows. Les Miserables – the Movie!

The musical Les Miserables is now in its 25th year in London’s West End. It is still very early days, but rumour has it that Cameron and Eric Fellner (who runs WT with Tim Bevan) are committed to making the picture together.

This is in part due to the fact that ticket sales soared when Susan Boyle sang the “I Dreamed A Dream” on Britain's Got Talent. It was viewed 85 million times on YouTube and studio chiefs became even more convinced of the public's affection for the show .

The Les Mis movie will not go into production before 2011 or early 2012 because WT have other projects to complete first and Cameron is busy with a string of stage shows, plus a new big-screen version of My Fair Lady (looking for a director after the departure of Oscar-winner Danny Boyle

Cameron has said there are endless casting possibilities for all the roles, but it's too early to discuss specific roles or actors.

Andrew Lloyd Webber rules out any more televised talent shows in 2009

Andrew Lloyd Webber will not be doing any more BBC1 West End talent searches this year, but is hoping to return in 2010 to find a Dorothy (and possibly Toto the dog) to star in his production of The Wizard of Oz, which the Really Useful Group recently acquired the rights to.

It is believed he has put any major plans on hold to concentrate on his  Love Never Dies sequel to Phantom of the Opera which is due to open early next yeat.

Working with Lloyd Webber has proved contentious for the BBC as they have come under fire for allegedly using a chunk of its Saturday night schedule to promote a commercial enterprise.

Michael Ball up for Willy Wonka role?

More news since my previous blog on 6th October -  Sam Mendes is still meant to be working on a stage adaptation of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory and rumour has it that Michael Ball has been approached to play the title role following in the footsteps of Gene Wilder and Johnny Depp. Both played the eccentric Wonka in the two film versions of Roald Dahl’s book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory

The book for this new musical will be written by Scottish playwright David Greig and Hairspray
’s Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman. It is planned to open in the west end

Lee Mead to appear in Babes in Arms?

Rumour has it that the Rodgers and Hart musical Babes in Arms will star Lee Mead – the Any Dream Will Do winner who turned into the star of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

The 1937 Broadway classic is being lined up for a West End revival in the New Year. The rarely seen musical was at Chichester Festival Theatre a couple of years ago starring Judy Garland’s daughter Lorna Luft. The supposed London transfer of this production never materialised.

Babes in Arms is set in the glory days of musical theatre with a group of starry eyed young actors from a Cape Cod playhouse decide to transport their show from a barn to Broadway. Some of the classic musical numbers in the show include “The Lady Is a Tramp”, “My Funny Valentine”, “I Wish I were In Love Again” and “Johnny One Note”.

The original film version was released in 1939 starring Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney, directed by Busby Berkeley.

Lee Mead has been involved in several productions since leaving from Joseph earlier this year, including a revival of Jesus Christ Superstar, a stage adaptation of the film "Roman Holiday"  and a musical based on the life of Marc Bolan in  20th Century Boy.

Churchill the nodding dog to star in 22 pantos

Pantomime has a long history of hiring TV personalities, but this year the tradition will be stretched to the limit when Churchill, the nodding dog from the insurance adverts, will appear in no less than 22 Christmas shows. The move comes after a recent advert showing Churchill - who has been a commercial mascot for 13 years - winning a fictional role in the West End musical Cats.

He will be paid a fee estimated as "tens of thousands of pounds" to jump out of the genie's lamp in Aladdin, be chased by Jack's giant at the top of the beanstalk and act as a chaperone to Cinderella.

And all this for just uttering the same lines he does in the advert: "oh yes" and "oh no" pre-recorded by the comedian Bob Mortimer. His movements will be performed by a hidden puppeteer.

The deal was has been signed with Qdos entertainment who are presenting Robin Hood starring John Barrowman at Cardiff, Aladdin starring Shane Richie at High Wycombe, Sleeping Beauty with Joe Pasquale and Ray Quinn at the Birmingham Hippodrome and Cinderella with Lesley Joseph at Dartford – all featuring Churchill.

Priscilla Taking a Detour to Broadway

Priscilla Queen Of The Desert The Musical will eventually drive its way to Broadway with her arrival scheduled for 6th March 2011. Obviously it is too early for casting details at this time.

Priscilla Queen Of The Desert is currently playing to packed houses at the Palace Theatre in London - booking through to May 2010. It has also just started previewing in Canada at the Prince of Wales Theatre in Toronto.

Priscilla is an uplifting and hilarious adventure of three friends who hop aboard a battered old bus (aka Priscilla) searching for love and friendship and ending up with more than they could have ever dreamed of.The camp musical features a truly dazzling array of outrageous costumes with some real dance-floor classics

Michael Ball to make way for Terry Wogan

Don't worry Terry is not about to take over Michael's concert tour - his Floral Dance recording put an end to that.

After he steps down from his breakfast slot later this year, Terry Wogan is scheduled to front a weekly two-hour Sunday brunch programme featuring live music and guests on Radio 2 as part of a series of changes being made to the station's schedule.

His new programme will be transmitted live from Central London and start at the more civilised time of 11:00. This is the slot currently occupied by Michael Ball who has been offered an alternative time (yet to be agreed)

The Rise and Fall of Little Voice

Is currently previewing and opens at the Vaudeville Theatre on 20th October (booking to 30th  January, 2010).  It is adapted from the  film “The Rise and Fall of Little Voice” which starred Michael Caine and Jane Horrocks – who is currently appearing in Annie Get your Gun and for who Jim Cartwright originally wrote the role.

The Rise and Fall of Little Voice is a very black musical comedy about the painfully shy Little Voice (LV) which is played by Diana Vickers (of X Factor fame). She lives in Scarborough with her drunken, overbearing mother and spends all her time in the bedroom listening to her dead father’s old records.

By doing this she learns to sing like some of the greatest divas: including Judy Garland, Edith Piaf and Shirley Bassey. When her mother’s boyfriend (who manages third rate club acts) overhears her singing he pushes her towards the stardom she is so terrified of and unleashes some devastating events.

Stephen Gateley

Such tragic news over the weekend about Stephen Gately from Boyzone, and so sad that the unscrupulous tabloids are trying to sell more newspapers by using headlines like "Gateley dead after 8 hour drink/drugs fuelled binge".

He was one of the best Josephs I have seen in Joseph & the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and his hit theme tune "I Believe" to the film version of Billy Elliott still brings tears to my eyes.

Stephen Gately also appeared in 2007 on ITV1's reality series Dancing on Ice in 2007 and last message on Twitter was  posted on 6th  October:  "Still busy - lots going on. Focussing on finishing my book next so may be quiet here."

It is Hispanity Day all over Spain today which means it's a public holiday and there can be no autopsy until tomorrow - let's hope the results show natural causes to shut these pariahs up.

God bless you Stephen...

Patrick Swayze’s mourners met by a horse

Mourners at a private memorial for Patrick Swayze last Sunday were greeted by a white Arabian horse which was one of the Dirty Dancing star's personal favourites from his horse farm.  The same horse was present when Patrick and Lisa renewed their marriage vows as the actor rode it to the ceremony.

It was saddled and was carrying Patrick’s cowboy boots facing backward in the stirrups as a tribute to the horse-loving late actor. Apparently it is an old tradition.

Several hundred mourners, including Whoopi Goldberg, arrived at the Sony Studios in California, to celebrate the life of Patrick at a service organised by his wife Lisa Niemi. The ceremony included a video tribute, speeches, photographs of the actor and dance routines.

It is expected that Patrick’s wife will eventually scatter his remains at their New Mexico ranch where they spent so many happy times.
