Beauty And The Beast at National Theatre

A new production of Beauty And The Beast will be staged in the Cottesloe at the National Theatre this Christmas. It is suitable for children aged eight and older and runs from 24th November to 5th January 2011 (press night 1st December).

It will be the second children’s Christmas show to be directed there by Katie Mitchell, with her Dr Seuss’s The Cat In The Hat playing there during the last festive season.

She is collaborating with the same creative team as The Cat In The Hat for of Beauty And The Beast, which promises an “explosion” of music, magic and puppets.

This version of the French fairytale has new text by playwright Lucy Kirkwood and music by Paul Clark, with a cast that includes Mark Arends and Justin Salinger – who also appeared in The Cat In The Hat – Sian Clifford, Kate DuchĂȘne, Kristin Hutchinson and Sean Jackson.

I was at the workshops for this production and it promises to be very scary and dark. Quite unlike the sanitised Disney version.

It certainly promises to be a bit different, and with that great creative team I'm definitely going to see it.
