Disastrous preview night for Bono's Spider Man Turn off the Dark musical

Bono and the Edge have financed the $65million Broadway musical Spider Man Turn off the Dark which had its first public preview last night at Foxwoods Theatre in New York.

It features a dazzling array of hi-tech gadgetry which was beset by problems when equipment fell from the rafters and actors were left hanging in the air.

The show lasted for three hours and 40 minutes (with an intermission) and featured 27 daredevil flying scenes. Some members of the audience walked out even though some had paid as much as $275 for a ticket.

Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark finally made it to the stage after a year's delay when actors have been injured and costs have spiralled. The goods news is that there are still more than five weeks to sort it out before opening night which was to be January 11th but has now been put back to February 7th.

Sierra Boggess to star in new Rebecca musical?

It was announced earlier this week that Rebecca the Musical  would follow Flashdance into the Shaftesbury Theatre next Spring.

No official casting has yet been announced, but there are strong rumours that Sierra Boggess (currently starring as Christine in Love Never Dies at the Adelphi Theatre) has been approached to play Mrs de Winter. She has already tackled the role in the second UK  workshop of the musical last month.

This is the key role as the new wife which Maxim De Winter takes to his Manderley estate in Cornwall where she is taunted by the ghostly presence of the late Mrs De Winter (the glamorous Rebecca) and encounters the evil housekeeper Mrs Danvers. The music is very different ranging from choral scoring to power ballads and would be perfect for Boggess’ voice.

Her contract for Love Never Dies  is set to end on March 12th, and if she takes  role it would mean starting rehearsals immediately.  The big fly in the ointment is that an extension of her work visa and Equity union permissions must be sorted before the American can be signed officially.

Alfie Boe to play Jean Valjean in Les Miserables next year

The Daily Mail’s Baz Bamigboye has added credence to the strong rumours circulating in London’s West End that operatic tenor Alfie Boe is poised to take over the role of Jean Valjean in Les Miserables at the Queen’s Theatre next year when Simon Bowman ends his run on 19th June.

Following his outstanding performance in the 25th Anniversary Concert at the 02 Arena in October, he has been asked to take on the role for six months and Cameron Mackintosh is also hinting that he might also play the role in the long-anticipated film version of the musical.

Boe did two one week runs in Les Miserables in preparation for his role in the concert, but  did not do the matinees. Although I am a great fan of his, when watching him do the whole show I did feel that his performance was a bit “too operatic” for a West End musical.  But he will have six months to get it right …

If you want to hear him sing in the 02 concert the DVD is released on 29th November and you can order a copy from Amazon.

New musical Betty Blue Eyes tempts Sarah Lancashire back to the stage

Sarah Lancashire has been taking time out from acting to pursue writing projects, but she put everything on hold to star in Betty Blue Eyes which is Cameron Mackintosh's first new musical in a decade.

It is based on Alan Bennett’s “A Private Function” and Lancashire is set to play Joyce which is the part Maggie Smith played in the 1984 film.

The  former Coronation Street actress (she played barmaid Raquel for a number of years) last appeared in musical theatre five years ago in Michael Grandage's award-winning production of Guys And Dolls,  but her critically acclaimed appearance was cut short by ill health as she had to pull out after a month with a chest infection.

Betty Blue Eyes opens at the Novello Theatre in March. Tickets go on sale on 29th November.

The musical has been in development for a while, and focuses on a community preparing to celebrate the royal wedding of the Queen to Prince Philip. Lancashire said: “I think William and Kate have timed their wedding superbly. The piece is extraordinarily resonant at the moment. I'm just utterly thrilled to be doing it.

Michael Ball on producing Love Story the Musical

Michael Ball is a very busy man at the moment as he is currently appearing in the touring production of Hairspray, there is another series of his Radio 2 show on the horizon as well as a new television series of the Michael Ball Show. He has a new album to record and his Heroes solo concert tour to plan.

And on top of all that he is one of the producers of the new musical Love Story which starts previews at the Duchess Theatre in London’s West End on 27th November (0pening night 6th December) having transferred in from the Chichester Festival Theatre.

Michael took his mum and long-term partner Cathy McGowan to see the production in Chichester, “purely out of interest” because he lives nearby and because Emma Williams who is playing the female lead was his former co-star in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. The show made an impression. “I was simply knocked out,” he says. “I thought it was beautiful.”

Love Story’s existing producers Stephen Waley-Cohen and Adam Spiegel were already considering taking the musical into London, so when Ball rang Spiegel (who he worked  with on Hairspray in the West End)  to express his enthusiasm for the show the producer seized the opportunity. Ball said: “It just seemed the right thing to do at the right time, and one of those things that happened so organically, not planned, not contrived. It’s one of those things that absolutely feel like they are meant to be.”

Ball is fully involved in producing duties: “I think it was very helpful for them to have somebody who is coming into it absolutely fresh, seeing it for the first time in the theatre having not gone through workshops and different permutations,” he says. He has also taken on the marketing side of things, advising on the poster design and creating press opportunities.

The hardest thing about his transition from performer to producer will probably be sitting in the audience on opening night and not be able to do anything to influence the evening. “You just have to sit and hope.”

Eurythmics’ Dave Stewart Writing New Musical about Bar Italia

With his new musical Ghost in the pre-production stage and due to open in London’s West end next year, Dave Stewart from the Eurythmics has announced that he is working with Porridge and The Likely Lads writer Ian La Frenais on a musical about Bar Italia which is a famous London Café in Soho.

The musical has been inspired by the Polledri family who opened Bar Italia in 1949 to cater for immigrants in London's Italian quarter and who still run the cafe. It was one of London's first continental coffee shops and it’s still going today with Dave Stewart as one of its famous customers.

He will be able to draw on the real cafe's colourful history for material as it was opened by US superstars Bud Abbott and Lou Costello, and is a favoured haunt of celebrities ranging from Rocky Marciano to Francis Ford Coppola. The cafe was in the thick of Soho's gang culture, with notorious fights taking place outside and customers with mob connections.

Stewart said: "This coffee shop is very small but what goes on in there is as big as the world. It's about la famiglia - about an Italian family out of place in the middle of Soho, where there are strip joints and everything, and they're a little Catholic family opening a coffee shop. You've already got that great juxtaposition."

The show will tell the fictional story of the owners' son who is lined up to take over the cafe but becomes involved with local criminals.

There are no dates mentioned yet, but will keep you posted.

Rebecca the Musical UK Workshops

Rebecca the Musical which is due to replace Flashdance and open at the Shaftesbury Theatre next spring has already held a couple of workshops in the UK.  In fact the producers were originally intending to open the first English production on Broadway in 2012 but it was the London workshops that made them decide that the West End would be a better choice.

The first workshop in May 2009 featured Lisa O'Hare as 'I', Julian Ovenden as Maxim de Winter, Anna Francolini as Mrs Danvers and Susannah Fellows, David Burt and  Jessica Martin in other roles.

In October the second reading starred Sierra Boggess (currently Christine in Love Never Dies) as 'I', Brent Barrett as Maxim de Winter and Pia Douwes as Mrs Danvers.

Maybe they hold some clues to the eventual casting?

Jason Donovan, Rhydian and Liz McClarnon starring of The War of the Worlds Arena Tour

Jason Donovan, Atomic Kitten’s Liz McClarnon and X Factor’s Rhydian Roberts are about to embark on an arena tour of Jeff Wayne’s The War of the Worlds.

They have been rehearsing in West London for the show which opens in Amsterdam tomorrow before going on an extensive tour of 14 UK dates (including London’s 02 Arena on 12th December) ending at Wembley Arena on 18th December.

Rhydian’s trademark platinum blonde locks are now dark brown while he plays the part of Parson Nathaniel with Liz McClarnon playing his wife and Jason Donovan as The Artilleryman.

The novel was written in 1898 and describes the experiences of someone who travels through the suburbs of London as earth is invaded by Martians.  It was the earliest story of a conflict between man and aliens and caused widespread panic when it was first broadcast on the radio as it was so realistic that people thought it was really happening.

Steven Spielberg directed the 2005 film which starred Tom Cruise, Dakota Fanning and Tim Robbins.

Jeff Wayne’s touring version includes special effects of an 11’ high 3D floating hologram of Richard Burton (journalist George Herbert) as well as a three tonne, 35’ Martian Fighting Machine which fires flame heat rays at the audience.  So don’t sit too near the front!

Betty Blue Eyes Preview Date and Latest Casting News

Cameron Mackintosh has confirmed that his new musical Betty Blue Eyes starts previews at the Novello Theatre on 19th March 2011 with tickets going on sale on 29th November.

It stars Sarah Lancashire and Reece Shearsmith with other casting news to date including David Bamber (Swaby), Jack Edwards (Allardyce), Mark Meadows (Lockwood), Adrian Scarborough (Wormold) and Ann Emery (Mother Dear).

The opening of the musical centres on a Royal wedding which conveniently coincides with the real wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton which was announced earlier this week.

In a statement Cameron Mackintosh said: “Even though my recent productions of Oliver!, My Fair Lady, Mary Poppins and the new Les Mis have all had great success, Betty Blue Eyes is my first original musical in over ten years. As a long-time admirer of Alan Bennett’s wickedly funny screenplay for the film A Private Function, I immediately fell in love with this infectious and delicious musical treatment which has expanded on the original. It is an utterly British and suitably crackers musical and yet surprisingly was the idea of two American writers Ron Cowen and Daniel Lipman – but you’d never know it! As we all face Austerity Britain and a Royal Wedding, Betty Blue Eyes proves that British pluck will make sure good times are just around the corner

Ray Quinn still not Dirty Dancing but looks OK for Jack and the Beanstalk

Ray Quinn is still not back in Dirty Dancing and it looks unlikely he will be fit enough to return before he starts panto rehearsals at the end of this month.

He has a broken collar bone and had to have an operation to insert a plate last week, but it went well and it looks as though he will be able to appear in Jack and the Beanstalk at the Northampton Derngate.

His return date to Dirty Dancing after the panto is 17th January 2011.  Until which time his role is being performed by Will Breckin.

South Pacific Barbican opening prior to UK tour

The 1949 Rogers and Hammerstein musical South Pacific was last seen in the West End in 2001 when it was revived by Trevor Nunn at the National Theatre and Philip Quast won an Olivier Award for Best Actor in a Musical for his portrayal of Emile de Becque. It was also toured by UK Productions in 2007

ATG's Howard Panter has been very keen to bring the production to the UK, and it now appears that the award winning the Lincoln Center's long-running revival of South Pacific is crossing Atlantic to open at the Barbican next autumn prior to the UK tour which will be launched at the Milton Keynes Theatre running  from 12th- 22nd October 2011.  It then moves on to the Palace Theatre Manchester 25th October-5th November and Glasgow Theatre Royal 8th-19th November,

Bartlett Sher's production won seven Tony Awards including Best Musical Revival, before ending its two-year run in the Vivian Beaumont Theater on 22nd August 2010. The New York revival starred Kelli O'Hara as nurse Nellie Forbush and Tony winner Paulo Szot as Emile DeBecque.
