Lion King ,Viva Forever and Wicked! to be hit by strikes?

UPDATED 1st March: Ambassador Theatre Group  successfully completed ACAS negotiations with BECTU yesterday resolving  all disputed issues including the move to monthly pay.

West End hit musicals including the Lion King ,Viva Forever and Wicked! could be hit by strikes if the Ambassador Theatre Group and  theatre union BECTU can't reach agreement over pay rises for hundreds of staff (most of whom are paid £6.45 an hour which just above the minimum wage).

ATG runs 41 UK theatres with 12 in the West End, including the Lyceum,Victoria Apollo and  Piccadilly.

BECTU  is balloting for strike action after they walked away from talks at the conciliation service ACAS on Monday.  A spokesman for the management said: "ATG was stunned and disappointed when Bectu decided to break off from negotiations on Monday. Virtually all outstanding issues had been resolved and ATG is keen to continue talks with Bectu in order to find a swift resolution."

The  union warned "Plans for industrial action will not be decided until the strike ballot has got under way, but the union has already warned theatregoers that they should check in advance whether the shows they have booked might be hit."

ATG are accused of sabotaging talks by demanding changes in conditions which were agreed only a few months ago.  This includes cutting the minimum amount of time front-of-house workers would be paid for each performance from 3.5 to three hours. The management spokesman said improved pay and an agreement on minimum hours had been offered at the talks and rejected.

Preview of Michael Ball’s New Album Both Sides Now

As soon as MICHAEL BALL finished playing the lead in the multi award winning musical Sweeney Todd last year he set up a new concert tour  which takes place in April and May and recorded his new solo album Both Sides Now which is due for release on 25th February.

The album features songs by some of his favourite artists including Joni Mitchell, Katie Melua and Dolly Parton, mixed with musical theatre standards and new songs by world famous composers. I was fortunate enough to be sent a five track sampler CD to review before it is released.

The tracks I listened to were Both Sides Now was sung tenderly and with real emotion but I found his version a bit slow and drawn out compared to the original which I love. Joni Mitchell is Michael’s favourite singer/songwriter so it’s no surprise that he chose this as the title track which she wrote in 1967

The Perfect Song is a new number written by Andrew Lloyd Webber and Leslie Bricusse which marks the first time they have ever worked together. It will be released as a single on March 18th.

Michael describes how the song came about: “I was chatting to Andrew Lloyd Webber at a party and told him I was recording a new album and he said to me: ‘Actually Michael I’ve just written a new song with Leslie Bricusse and I think you should have it!  I was in Los Angeles last week for Leslie’s 82nd birthday and Michael Caine, who was there as well, asked Leslie and me if we’d ever written a song together.  We realised we hadn’t and thought it was a great idea! Andrew then told me that Leslie came up with the title ‘The Perfect Song’, and Andrew wrote the music in the back of a cab on the way home!  He then sent over the music to Leslie and Leslie wrote the lyrics.  It’s an absolutely beautiful song written by two of the finest songwriters in the world and I’m extremely proud to be premiering it on my new album.”

My think my expectations of this new song were probably very high but I’m afraid I felt disappointed.  The Perfect Song is very sweet, slow and melodic and it started to grow on me after I listened to it the second time, but to me musically it was nothing new and the lyrics were nothing special.

Next was Joan Armatrading’s Love and Affection which started very slowly but once the orchestrations kicked in and it got going Michael sang it beautifully.

The Katie Melua hit Closest Thing to Crazy was one of best renditions I have heard. Sung with real emotion.  Loved it!

And last but not least Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Love Changes Everything from Aspects of Love which Michael sings with Il Divo. It is the last track on the album and starts off very low key with Michael and orchestral backing then the "Divos" join in one at a time until it builds with them all singing.  Good thing is they do not try to out sing one another but combine perfectly to sing it as group plus one! Not my favourite song on the album but my favourite performance of the numbers I was asked to review.

All of the tracks I listened to underlined Ball's vocal virtuosity and musical theatre voice with real feeling and emotion. The album is a well thought out and good mix of numbers.

The ones which I am looking forward to hearing are the new song Suddenly which Boublil, Schonberg & Kretzmer wrote for the LesMis movie which I think he will sing beautifully. Hugh Jackman sang this to Cosette in horse drawn carriage as he was whisking her away in from Thenardiers. But he acted and spoke it more than singing it so will be interested to hear what Michael makes of it.

Track number 13 is Fight The Fight which is a new song by Tim Rice & Stuart Brayson from the new musical From Here To Eternity which starts previews at the Shaftesbury Theatre at the end of September.  It was first recorded as a big production number but sounded wrong so has been pared right back to being very simple with guitar and strings and Michael harmonising with himself.

Also Adele’s Make You Feel My Love is a favourite of mine along with I Won’t Send Roses from Mack and Mabel.

The full track listing for Both Sides Now is:

1.    Both Sides Now (org. Joni Mitchell 1967)
2.    The Perfect Song (new song by Andrew Lloyd Webber, Leslie Bricusse)
3.    I Won’t Let You Go (James Morrison 2011)

7.    I Will Always Love You ( from ‘The Bodyguard’)
8.    I Won’t Send Roses (Jerry Herman, ‘Mack and Mabel’)
9.    Run (org. Snow Patrol, 2007 / also hit for Leona Lewis, 2009)

Les Miserables Opening on Broadway in March 2014

Cameron Mackintosh just just announced that his new production of Les Miserables will open at a Shubert Theatre on  Broadway in March 2014.

The US national tour of the new production has been a sell-out breaking box offices since it began in November 2010. It has played in 64 cities grossing more than $130 million.

Cameron Mackintosh said: To my constant surprise, my productions continue to be enjoyed as much as ever by audiences all around the world and I'm thrilled to have the unique chance of redoing them all over as if they were brand new shows. I'm even more delighted that they are proving just as big hits at the box office in their new form as the originals, having recently reinvented Oliver!, Phantom and Miss Saigon to similar acclaim to the new Les Miserables. It's marvelous that modern audiences are embracing them as contemporary musicals rather than revivals. I am delighted that Broadway audiences will now join the millions of Americans who have already flocked to see this glorious new staging and spectacular re-imagined scenery inspired by the paintings of Victor Hugo.

Wendy Mae Brown in Ghost Tour

For me one of the stand out performances in the production of Kiss Me Kate which closes at the Old Vic on 2nd March is Wendy Mae Brown with her belting voice playing Hattie.

And now is seems the cliche "what's in a name" has come true because she is going to play Oda Mae Brown in the Tour of Ghost the Musical which kicks off in April at Cardiff Millennium Centre.   This is the larger than life part of the medium originally made famous by Whoopi Goldberg in the movie and played superbly by Sharon D Clarke in London's West End.

Wendy Mae Brown theatre credits include Stepping Out, Come Dancing,  King Cotton, Porgy and Bess,  Barnum, To Kill a Mocking Bird, Rent,The Wizard of Oz and Mamma Mia!

The Highlights edition is currently top of the UK album chart and is the fastest-selling album in the UK this year.

Producer Sir Cameron Mackintosh said: "Post-production on the Les Miserables film was extremely tight, with recording of the orchestra, final edit and sound mix having to be completed in only a few weeks. X Factor: The Musical Likely to Offend?

According to an article in today's Mail the plot of X Factor: The Musical was unveiled to Simon Cowell’s closest circle at a private read-through in Soho last week.

Until now he has managed to keep details of the new musical being written by comedian Harry Hill closely under wraps, but details of the script suggest it is quite likely to offend current and former stars of the show.

Among those being targeted is presenter Dermot O’Leary whose character is portrayed as pathetic and needy and Cheryl Cole's character is a judge called Geordie who spends a lot of time sobbing into a Chelsea football jersey (referring to her very public  failed marriage to footballer Ashley Cole).

Sharon Osbourne and Dannii Minogue do not feature in the musical with the panel made up of actors playing Cowell, Louis Walsh and Geordie.

It tells the story of Shenise (thought to be based on 2008  winner Alexandra Burke) and her ‘journey’ on the ITV1 talent  show.

During the second act there is ballad "Falling in Love With Myself" for the character of judge Simon Cowell, who was played at the workshop by West End leading man Alexander Hanson (A Little Night Music, Pontius Pilate in the last Arena Tour of Jesus Chris Superstar).

At the end of the show Simon is revealed to be an alien who blasts off back to space  from where he controls the entire world.

Cowell is known for his love of causing controversy for publicity and a production source told the Mail: "This is Simon’s pet project and he’s ecstatic with the script. He was in tears of laughter at the read-through. He knows how much trouble he’s going to cause. Dermot, Dannii, Cheryl and Sharon will all be furious for different reasons. This is his ultimate revenge  he doesn’t care who he offends. Simon is confident his musical is going to be a huge hit. He hasn’t been this excited about a project for ages."

So confident that his company Syco has invested  £10 million with hopes that it will open in the West End.

Ben Forster has been playing the role of Brad Majors but is due to leave on 2nd March so that he could play the lead again in the now postponed tour of Jesus Christ Superstar.  Sam Attwater will take on the role from 4th March to 20th July.

Sam is probably best known for playing Leon Small in EastEnders. He won the sixth series of Dancing on Ice in 2011 and most recently appeared as Norman in the West End in Dreamboats & Petticoats.

New Tour Dates for Jesus Christ Superstar Tour

The new  Andrew Lloyd Webber arena tour of Jesus Christ Superstar which was due to start in March has been postponed until later in the year and will now start in October.

In a joint statement from Lloyd Webber's Really Useful Group and AEG Live: "Due to circumstances beyond their control RUG and AEG are rescheduling the Jesus Christ Superstar arena tour dates originally planned for March. This is largely due to the enormous demand across the Globe with tours in Australia, Europe and USA to be announced soon."

"In order to avoid disappointing the thousands of fans who have already purchased tickets for the tour in March, the UK dates will be rescheduled for October and the good news is that in addition to the previously announced cities the new time period enables us to add two brand new buildings that were not available in March, the Leeds Arena and The Hydro, Glasgow."

The new tour dates are: The Hydro, Glasgow (1st October), Birmingham NIA Arena (3rd October), Leeds Arena (4th October), Newcastle Metro Arena (6th October), Cardiff Motorpoint Arena (8th October), Nottingham Arena (10th October), Manchester Arena (11th October), London O2 (13th October) and Liverpool Echo Arena (15th October). Tim Minchin, Melanie C, Ben Forster and Chris Moyles will return for the rescheduled dates.

Tour of Fiddler on the Roof opens at Southampton in September

UPDATED 9th April: More news of  dates for the Fiddler on the Roof Tour is that it will be staged at The Mayflower in Southampton from September 5th-14th prior to a UK and Ireland tour.

It will play at Edinburgh's Festival Theatre from 1st-5th  October and at the Marlowe in Canterbury from 5th-9th November  with many more venues to be confirmed.

Music and Lyrics  have now announced their next production will be a new tour of Fiddler on the Roof produced by Strictly Come Dancing’s Craig Revel Horwood.

Fiddler on the Roof was the longest running production on Broadway for over 13 years and is full of instantly recognizable songs including If I Were a Rich Man, Matchmaker Matchmaker and  Sunrise Sunset.

It tells the story of Tevye (originally played by Topol) who is the local milkman in his village of Anatevka. He has always stuck by his traditions but suddenly his headstrong daughters decide that they want to marry for love rather than accept whatever Yente the Matchmaker comes up with.

Tevye loves his daughters but has to convince his wife and the villagers that their decisions are actually falling in with tradition – not any easy thing to do. Tradition is all well and good, but in the end the world moves on, as do the villagers - but maybe not for the reasons they intended.

Barbra Streisand to Perform at Oscars this month

The legendary Barbra Streisand is performing at this year's Oscar Ceremony on Sunday 24th February. The last time she performed was 36 years ago in 1977 when she sang Evergreen from A Star is Born which was that year's winner of the gong for best original song.

The late and great composer Marvin Hamlisch is expected to be remembered at this year's ceremony so hopefully she will be part of that tribute and sing one of his songs.

The ceremony's producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron said: "In an evening that celebrates the artistry of movies and music, how could the telecast be complete without Barbra Streisand?"

Norah Jones will also perform the best original song nomination Everybody Needs a Best Friend from Ted and Adele will sing the Bond number Skyfall, which is up for the same prize.

Hugh Jackman's Houdini the Musical Delayed

As I mentioned last June Hugh Jackman is keen to star on Broadway in the new Harry Houdini Musical.  But the production is under threat since Oscar-winning writer Aaron Sorkin has dropped out.

Jackman signed up to play the escapologist in the new show which was due to be written by Sorkin (The West Wing, The Social Network and A Few Good Men). But Sorkin has had to leave the project due to his commitments in writing film scripts and his new hit TV show The Newsroom.

In a statement he said: "I was really looking forward to returning to Broadway and working with such an incredible team. I am very disappointed my schedule won't allow that at this time."

The musical's producers Scott Sander and David Rockwell added: "Mr Sorkin's considerable talents are an asset to any project and we regret that he's unable to remain with Houdini. However, what Hugh and the creative team continue to create is one of the most exciting projects we've ever been a part of. Our projected arrival on Broadway and additional creative team announcement will be made at a future date."

I suspect that part of the deal with Jackman was that Sorkin was the writer, so this could now be shelved indefinitely.
