Godspell in Concert UK tour to close early

The UK tour of Godspell in Concert is to close two months early. The 28-date tour had been scheduled to 3rd July  but The final performance will be at the Princess Theatre, Torquay  on 6th  May producers announced this morning.

Russell Scott, Producer & Musical Director of the show said “It is with a heavy heart we announce the early closure of Godspell in Concert. We have had an incredible journey and despite rave reviews, audience acclaim and standing ovations, ticket sales have been disappointing, and so after five glorious weeks with the most amazing company, cast and creative team, we are announcing early closure.

Dusty at Charing Cross Theatre extends run to 21 November 2015

Updated 20th July;  the show has now extended is run to 21 November 2015


Dusty is a  new multi-media show celebrating  Dusty Springfield. It  will receive its world premiere at the Charing Cross Theatre with press night on  7th September. Tickets are now on sale for the show which is booking to 21 November 2015.

Casting for Thoroughly Modern Millie at Landor

A new production of the musical  Thoroughly Modern Millie is being presented by SDWC Productions at the Landor Theatre from18th  August – 13th September (previews 18th-25th August)

This marks the show’s triumphant return to London 11 years after it was first seen at the Shaftesbury Theatre in 2003.Thoroughly Modern Millie is a high-spirited romp that has all of New York dancing the Charleston.  Taking place in New York City in 1922, It tells the story of young Millie Dillmount, who has just moved to the city in search of a new life for herself. It’s a New York full of intrigue and jazz - a time when women were entering the workforce and the rules of love and social behaviour were changing forever.

Based on the popular movie and filled with frisky flappers, dashing leading men and a dragon-lady of a villainess, the infamous Mrs Meers, Thoroughly Modern Millie is a perfectly constructed evening of madcap merriment.WINNER OF SIX TONY AWARDS INCLUDING BEST MUSICAL  (Broadway 2002) NOMINATED FOR THREE LAURENCE OLIVIER AWARDS (West End  2004)

New West End Men Concerts featuring Glenn Carter, Alexis Gerred, Marcus Collins and James Bisp

Direct from a West End run and a sell-out tour of Asia, The West End Men return to the UK in May with a brand new show celebrating the leading Men of the West End.

Cats to return to the Palladium over Christmas

Andrew Lloyd Webber has confirmed the rumours of his musical Cats returning  to the London Palladium from October 23rd- January 2nd  next year . It is due to end its current run there tomorrow  with Kerry Ellis starring at Grizabella.

No casting news yet for the London revival as  director Trevor Nunn, choreographer Gillian Lynne and designer John Napier just finished choosing actors for this summer's production, starring Jane McDonald as 'Grizabella' which will have a six-week summer run at the Blackpool Opera House, beginning July 9th

The musical is also due e to return to Broadway in 2016 -  hopefully starring Nicole Scherzinger.

Sharon D Clarke and Giles Terera to star in Ma Rainey's Black Bottom

Powerhouse Sharon D Clarke and Giles Terera are to  star  August Wilson's MA RAINEY'S BLACK BOTTOM which is headed to the National Theatre in January, directed by Dominic Cooke.

It is set in Chicago in the 1920s and centres on Ma Rainey and her band, who while recording a new album, hit on issues of race, art, religion and exploitation in their community.

It  first opened at the National in 1989 and  is part of Wilson's ten-play cycle exploring the 20th century African American experience.

Clarke last appeared in the West End in GHOST THE MUSICAL and has also starred in WE WILL ROCK YOU, STEPPING OUT, GUYS AND DOLLS and ONCE ON THIS ISLAND. Among her other credits are THE LION KING at the Lyceum, THE AMEN CORNER at the Royal National Theatre, PORGY AND BESS at Regent's Park and more.

Terera, who currently stars in London's THE BOOK OF MORMON, also appeared in the West End's AVENUE Q. Among his other stage credits are DEATH AND THE KING'S HORSEMAN, THE TEMPEST, RENT, 125TH STREET and JAILHOUSE ROCK. He is also a filmmaker and musician behind the documentary MUSE OF FIRE.

New Tour of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang

A new tour of the musical Chitty Chitty Bang Bang is due to launch at West Yorkshire Playhouse from December 2nd , followed by a run at the Mayflower Theatre in Southampton from  February 10th, 2016 followed by a UK tour with more dates  to follow.

It will be directed by James Brining with choreography by  Stephen Mear who is responsible for Imelda Staunton's Gypsy at the Savoy.

More casting news for Kinky Boots

West End leading man Killian  Donnelly is to star as Charlie Price in the hit Broadway musical Kinky Boots when it starts previews  at the Adelphi Theatre in August.   He will leave the musical Memphis which he is currently starring with Beverley Knight at the Shaftesbury on 4th  July to start rehearsals on the 6th with director Jerry Mitchell, book writer Harvey Fierstein and composer Cyndi Lauper. Theatre credits include The Commitments (Palace Theatre), Billy Elliot (Victoria Palace Theatre), The Phantom of the Opera (Her Majesty’s Theatre), Les Misérables (Queens Theatre), Michael Collins – A Musical Drama (Cork Opera House), The Full Monty (Olympia Theatre) and West Side Story (Solstice Theatre). Killian’s film credits include Les Misérables (Working Title). He has also appeared on television in Showbands (RTÉ) and The Last Furlong (RTÉ).

The singer-actor Matt Henry is playing drag queen Lola. He memorably auditioned for The Voice in 2013 and has theatre  credits including Avenue Q (National Tour), The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe (Northampton), The Harder They Come (Theatre Royal Stratford East, Nottingham Playhouse and National Tour), The Rat Pack Live from Las Vegas, The Frontline (Shakespeare’s Globe), Hair (English Theatre Frankfurt), Saturday Night Fever (National Tour) and Miss Saigon (Cameron Mackintosh). Feature film credits include Muppets Most Wanted and Gulliver’s Travels. He  bought a pair of women’s heels from eBay and wore them when he met the Kinky Boots casting director as there is one number where Lola has to dance in skinny six-inch stilettos.Henry said¨I pitched up in heels because I have worn them before, professionally adding that between jobs he has taught models to ‘catwalk’ in heels. As Lola, I have to wear a lot of heels, and practicing helps to build up the calf muscles,’

Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown now closing end of May

Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown which stars Tamsin Greig and Haydn Gwynne  will now close at the Playhouse Theatre on 23rd May  instead of shuttering on the previously announced extension  to 22nd August 2015.

The producers said: "We're very proud of this production, our superb cast and creative team, and the wonderful critical and audience response during the season."

Dirty Dancing Tour Cast Changes

On 30th April  Jessie Hart  will join the tour of Dirty Dancing as Baby Houseman. She  recently graduated from Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts, and has played Agnes'in the ITV drama Arthur and George and  Gerda in The Snow Queen at the Nuffield Theatre.

Lewis Kirk will be starring as Johnny Castle. He was a member of the 2014/15 touring company and previously toured the UK  in Hairspray. He  has also appeared in Our House 10th Anniversary Concert at the Savoy and in the world premiere of Soho Cinders.

Also joining the cast are Lori Haley Fox as Marjorie Houseman, Georgina Castle as Lisa Houseman, Kane Verrall as Neil Kellerman and Matthew Colthart as Billy Kostecki. Albey Brookes will also be joining the ensemble.

Miss Saigon cast Changes

Just announced: New cast members joining  Miss Saigon from 11th  May 2015.

Chris Peluso is making his West End debut as Chris having most recently appeared in “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical” on Broadway.  His other theatre credits on Broadway and on tour in the US include: “Assassins”,” Lestat”, “Mamma Mia!” and “Wicked”.

Siobhan Dillon (Ellen) rose to fame in the BBC series “How Do You Solve a Problem like Maria?” in 2006.  Most recently she appeared as ‘Sally Bowles’ in Rufus Norris’s production of “Cabaret”. Her other theatre credits include: ‘Molly’ in “Ghost The Musical”; ‘Vivienne Kensington’ in “Legally Blonde The Musical” and ‘Sandy’ in “Grease”.

Natalie Mendoza (Gigi) has most recently appeared as ‘Imelda Marcos’ in the critically acclaimed “Here Lies Love” at the National Theatre. She also appeared as ‘Arachne’ in “Spiderman: Turn Off the Dark” on Broadway. Her other theatre credits in her native Australia include “Les Misérables” and “Sweet Charity”. She is well known for her roles as ‘Jackie Clunes’ in BBC One’s “Hotel Babylon” and ‘Juno’ in the films “The Descent” and “The Descent 2”.

Sangwoong Jo, whose credits in his native Korea include Love Letter and Wicked, will play Thuy.

Award-winning Jon Jon Briones and Eva Noblezada will continue in their roles of The Engineer and Kim respectively, with Hugh Maynard also continuing as John. At certain performances, Tanya Manalang will play Kim and Christian Rey Marbella will play The Engineer.

Open Auditions for Dreamgirls Musical

Casey Nicholaw, will direct the first UK production of the musical Dreamgirls which is rumoured to  open next year in London outside the West End. His impressive Broadway credits include Aladdin, Elf, The Book of Mormon (which earned him a Tony in 2011), All About Me and The Drowsy Chaperone. He also choreographed Spamalot  for its West End run and US national tour.

He is  working with producer Sonia Friedman and casting director Pippa Ailion to hold open auditions for black and mixed race singers with strong soul/pop voices for lead roles in the show about a Supremes-like girl group working for a Motown-esque mogul.

The open call will be on May 5th at Glasshill Studios, 20-24 Kings Bench Street, London, SE1 0QX. Registration is from 10:00am-1.30pm.

Casting Announced for What’s It All About? Bacharach Reimagined at Menier

Updated 16th June: Kyle Riabko (Hair on Broadway) will star opposite  original cast members Daniel Bailen and James Williams in the forthcoming UK premiere of New York hit What’s It All About? Bacharach Reimagined at the Menier They will be joined by newcomers Greg Coulson, Anastacia McCleskey, Stephenie McKeon and Renato Paris for the musical’s run at the London Bridge venue from 3 July to 5 September.

First staged at the New York Theatre Workshop in 2013, What’s It All About? Bacharach Reimagined will take audiences on a 90-minute non-stop musical journey combining nostalgia and innovation with more than 30 of the American singer and composer’s greatest hits.

Directed by Olivier Award winner Steven Hoggett, the show features tunes recorded by some of the music industry’s best known artists and features everything from Raindrops Keep Fallin’ On My Head and I Say A Little Prayer to Walk On By, What’s New Pussycat? And I Just Don’t Know What To Do With Myself.

Burt Bacharach’s  songbook is given a new interpretation with Kyle Riabko’s  original musical arrangement. This 90 minute show will be  directed by Olivier Award-winner Steven Hoggett and  is a  non-stop musical journey which Riabko leads a group of six young performers through Bacharach’s classic melodies including  "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head", "Alfie", "I Say a Little Prayer", "Close to You", "The Look of Love" and "Magic Moments".

This production, conceived by Kyle Riabko and David Lane Seltzer, previously played to critical acclaim at New York Theatre Workshop, where it became the venue’s longest-running show.

After being introduced to Bacharach at a Los Angeles recording studio, Riabko created a series of demos, reinterpreting the composer’s classic songs.  Over the ensuing months, he took the demos to Bacharach who gave his blessing to What’s It All About? Bacharach Reimagined. After seeing the show, Bacharach said it felt as though he had received “a love letter” and commented: “Kyle has done something truly unique with my music.”

Earl Carpenter returning to LesMis on Broadway

West End leading man Earl Carpenter is returning  to the role of Javert  at Broadway's Imperial Theatre on  May 12th taking over from Will Swenson who gives his final performance in the role on May 10th. Carpenter performed the role on Broadway last summer while Swenson was away  from the production for another project.
The cast of Les Miserables includes Tony Award nominee Ramin Karimloo as Jean Valjean, Oliver Award nominee Gavin Lee (Mary Poppins) as Thenardier, Erika Henningsen as Fantine, Samantha Hill as Cosette and Wallace Smith as Enjolras.

Sophie-Louise Dann joins Bend It Like Beckham

Ronni Ancona has had to withdraw from upcoming musical Bend It Like Beckham for "family reasons".


She was due to play Paul, Jules' mother, and   will be replaced in the role by Sophie-Louise Dann, who most recently played  Barbara Castle in Made in Dagenham".

 Bend It Like Beckham is currently in rehearsals and starts  previews on May 15th, with an official first night on June 24th at the Phoenix Theatre.

Ways to Watch the 2015 Olivier Awards

ITV is televising recorded  highlights 10:15pm to 12:00am from tomorrow's awards ceremony which is being hosted by Lenny Henry at the Royal Opera House.
But there is also plenty going on in the Piazza from 16:45 where Olivier Award nominee Michael Xavier and ITV This Morning's Alison Hammond will host an  evening of entertainment on the stage in Covent Garden  outside the Royal Opera House.  All the action from the ceremony  is being streamed live  directly to the Piazza on big screens with  a line-up of exclusive performances beforehand and during the interval from the This Morning Audience Award nominees Billy Elliot The Musical, Jersey Boys, Matilda The Musical and Wicked, as well Avenue Q, Beyond Bollywood, Sadler's Wells' Breakin’ Convention and the West End Gospel Choir.

The action on the Red Carpet starts from  from 17:00 when stars of the London stage and celebrities from film and television begin to arrive. You can see this as it happens by checking the Official London Theatre website, the awards' official news channel, for coverage throughout the evening.

Elegies For Angels, Punks and Raging Queens is a song cycle with music by Janet Hood and lyrics and additional text by Bill Russell featuring  songs and monologues inspired by the NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt and Edgar Lee Masters' Spoon River Anthology. Each of the monologues is written from the perspective of characters who have died from AIDS and the songs represent the feelings of friends and family members dealing with the loss.

The piece was developed in the late 1980s and was originally titled "The Quilt." It was produced first at the Ohio Theatre in Soho in NYC in 1989, where the new title was adopted. In 1992, it was produced at the King's Head Theatre in London, where it played for several months. In June 1993, the production was transferred to the Criterion Theatre in London's West End.

Strallen and Casey Sisters Unwrapped at Leicester Square

Three of the Strallen sisters (Summer, Scarlett and Zizi) will join  Anna-Jane and Natalie Casey for a one-off concert at the Leicester Square Theatre AT 20:00 on Sunday 19th  April.

They will star in Unwrapped... may contain Strallens and other Musical Nuts ..., which promises "a varied delight of music, comedy and chat".

Kerry Ellis & Louise Dearman Live in Concert

Kerry Ellis and Louise Dearman hosted a special launch party at the Prince Edward Theatre this morning to announce that they will be performing together professionally for the first time in a show called Kerry Ellis & Louise Dearman, Live In Concert… Together! on Sunday September  27th  at Prince Edward Theatre.

Although they have known each other for 20 years, they  have not sung together since leaving Laine Theatre Arts in 1998.

The pair will sing iconic duets, as well as solo numbers. The concert  feature a live band and will be musically directed and arranged by Craig Adams.

Ellis, who is starring as Grizabella in Cats in London, said “We are thrilled to be sharing the Prince Edward stage and have already started planning our set. We love each other’s work and can’t wait to sing together.”  Louise added, “It’s going to be an amazing night and we can’t wait to entertain our fans with a truly memorable evening for all of us!”

Performers and Coverage of the Olivier Awards

This year's  Olivier Awards will be held on Sunday 12th  April at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden  with full highlights  broadcast on ITV from 22:15 that evening. Lenny Henry will host proceedings with voice over by Julie Walters.

Guest presenters on the night include Dianna Agron, Jamie Campbell Bower, Laura Carmichael, Lauren Cuthbertson, Dame Judi Dench, Anne-Marie Duff, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Emilia Fox, Adam Garcia, David Harewood, Pixie Lott, Lorna Luft, James Norton, Claire Sweeney, Catherine Tate, Russell Tovey and Michael Urie, with more special guests on the night.

The cast of Sunny Afternoon will perform a medley of much-loved Kinks songs, and for Here Lies Love there will be an exclusive performance by leading lady Natalie Mendoza and Talking Heads' David Byrne, who co-created the show with Fatboy Slim. The pair share their own nomination in the Outstanding Achievement in Music category.

There will also be performances from the Magic Radio Best Musical Revival nominated productions, City Of Angels, The Gershwins' Porgy And Bess, Miss Saigon and Cats when  Olivier nominee Nicole Scherzinger sing  Memory.

The special finale performance will not be revealed until the night of the ceremony.

Members of the public can watch the stars arrive on the red carpet at the Royal Opera House from 17:00. This year's list of Olivier nominees include Gillian Anderson, Richard Armitage, Gemma Arterton, James McAvoy, Tamsin Greig, Beverley Knight, Dame Angela Lansbury, Mark Strong, Nicole Scherzinger, Dame Kristin Scott Thomas and Penelope Wilton.

The first casting has just been announced for the Open Air Theatre at  Regents Park production of Seven Brides for Seven Brothers which runs there from 16th July-29th August.
Alex Gaumond (ENO Sweeney Todd, Legally Blonde, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, Matilda)  is playing Adam Pontipee and Laura Pitt-Pulford (RAH Follies, The Light Princess, The Sound of Music)  is Milly Bradon.

Seven Brides for Seven Brothers is directed by Rachel Kavanaugh who reunites the creative team behind Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre’s award-winning production of The Sound of Music.

To coincide with the opening in mid-July,  JAY Records have  announced that they will be releasing a new recording of songs from Seven Brides for Seven Brothers featuring Laura Pitt-Pulford, Alex Gaumond and Sam O'Rourke.
