Donmar Marks Sondheim’s 80th Birthday

The Donmar Warehouse is presenting a revival of the musical Passion as part of Stephen Sondheim’s birthday celebrations when he turns 80 on 22nd March, 2010. The Donmar has had a long association with the composer’s work since 1992, with acclaimed productions of Assassins, Company, Into the Woods and Pacific Overtures.

Stephen Sondheim’s Passion is based on the Italian film Passione d’Amore, set amongst a battalion of soldiers in a bleak frontier town, where lonely Fosca’s obsessive passion threatens the happiness of Giorgio and his beautiful mistress Clara. It had its West End premiere in 1996 starring Maria Friedman, Michael Ball and Helen Hobson.

It will be directed by Donmar associate director Jamie Lloyd and is expected to star the Argentinean Elena Roger, who starred in his revival of Piaf. The exact dates have not yet been confirmed with productions currently booking there until 10th May 2010.
