Hannah Waddingham and Scarlett Strallen are tipped to play the Witch and Cinderella in the Open Air Theatre's revival of Stephen Sondheim's Into the Woods. Miss Waddingham was recently seen in A Little Night Music – another Sondheim show which was directed by Trevor Nunn - and has previously played the role of the Lady of the Lake in Spamalot.
Scarlett Strallen's credits include playing Mary Poppins in London’s West End and on Broadway.
It is Sondheim’s 80th birthday this year and this is one of a number of productions currently scheduled.
Into the Woods will run at the Open Air Theatre in Regent’s Park from August 5th to September 11th.
Into the Woods is one of my favourite Sondheim pieces recalling the tales of Cinderella, Jack and the Beanstalk, Little Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel and of the Baker and his Wife. But it wouldn’t be Sondheim unless the story soon turns dark and changes of fate occur for each of the characters as they experience the repercussions of their "happily ever afters’."
Into the Woods has music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and a book by James Lapine. It premiered on Broadway in 1987 with Bernadette Peters as the Witch and Joanna Gleason as the Baker's Wife.
