As I mentioned on 15th April, Musical Theatre will be strongly represented at this year’s BBC Proms, with one concert featuring the work of Stephen Sondheim and another the work of Rodgers & Hammerstein.
Maria Friedman and Simon Russell Beale will perform at the prom on 31st July which is dedicated to Stephen Sondheim in honour of his 80th birthday. They will be joined by Bryn Terfel to perform numbers from A Little Night Music, Into the Woods and Sunday in the Park with George.
The Rodgers and Hammerstein concert on 22nd August marks the 50th anniversary of the death of Hammerstein and will feature music from Carousel, The King and I, Oklahoma! The Sound of Music and South Pacific, performed by Kim Criswell, Anna-Jane Casey, Julian Ovenden, Rod Gilfry, the Maida Vale Singers and the John Wilson Orchestra.
Both concerts will be broadcast on BBC2.
