The 2010 Tony Awards were held last night at the Radio City Music Hall in New York. As far as musical theatre goes, the Brits did OK with the Menier Chocolate Factory’s award-winning La Cage Aux Folles winning Best Revival of a Musical beating Finian's Rainbow, A Little Night Music and Ragtime.
Douglas Hodge who is appearing as Albin in La Cage won Best Performance by a Leading Actor in a Musical beating Kelsey Grammer (La Cage aux Folles), Sean Hayes (Promises, Promises), Chad Kimball (Memphis) and Sahr Ngaujah, (Fela!).
La Cage did well with Terry Johnson winning best Direction of a Musical.
Memphis won most of the other musical theatre categories including Best Musical; Best book of a Musical, Best Original Score (Music and/or Lyrics) Written for the Theatre and Best Orchestrations
Catherine Zeta-Jones won Best Performance by a Leading Actress in a Musical for her appearance in Sondheim’s A Little Night Music (which transferred from the Menier Chocolate Factory).
Levi Kreis in Million Dollar Quartet won Best Performance by a Featured Actor in a Musical and Kate Finnernan (Promises, Promises) won Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical.
Best Scenic Design of a Musical and Best Lighting Design for a Musical went to Christine Jones and Kevin Adams respectively for American Idiot. Best Costume Design, Best Choreography and Best Sound Design were won by Marina Draghici, Bill T Jones & Daryl Waters and Robert Kaplowitz for Fela!
