Whoopi’s selling out at Sister Act

After the announcement was made the Whoopi Goldberg would be taking over from Sheila Hancock as Mother Superior in Sister Act the musical for a limited season of three weeks from 10th-31st August at the London Palladium over £1M of tickets were sold in two days.

Things have now settled down a bit but the taking for the show are still doubled in a daily basis and it’s predicted that the whole of her run will be sold out in the next few days with £1.72 million worth of tickets.

Whoopi has said she wants her performance to be very different from Maggie Smith’s in the two Sister Act films and Sheila Hancock in the show saying “I know she's got to be more reserved. You know, it's the Mother Superior we're dealing with here, but at the same time it will be a challenge because in my mind I'll hear lines coming at me and want to respond in a specific way. But you just can't; that's not the character.

It’s a great piece of fun, three weeks for me and in time they can find the person they want. I'll bring my Mother Superior groove to London and it'll be all right. I'm not Sheila and I'm not Maggie, this is an entirely different interpretation.”

She will be appearing with Patina Miller playing Deloris van Cartier (the role Whoopi created in the films) and ex-Blue member Simon Webbe as bad boy Curtis Shank.

Because of her busy schedule she is rehearsing and learning her songs in New York, and her only chance to do a full rehearsal in London will happen the night before she opens.

Ms Goldberg is a producer of Sister Act and has been involved behind the scenes at the Palladium and working towards it transferring to Broadway next year when it will be directed by Jerry Zaks.
