The producers of the musical version of Daphne Du Maurier’s novel Rebecca are holding a rehearsed reading in New York which Sierra Boggess will be attending after she leaves Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Love Never Dies (where she is playing Christine) on March 5th. Leading Broadway stars Hugh Panaro will read the part of Maxim de Winter and Carolee Carmello will read Mrs Danvers
Rebecca was lined up to open at the Shaftesbury Theatre, but it was found to be impossible to mount the set there as designers discovered an ancient stream running under the theatre when workmen drilled a test hole and hit water.
The producers are looking at other theatres in London but the suitable ones are currently occupied, so they are also considering Broadway with the plan to begin production in the autumn.
It is hoped that Ms Boggess will star as “I”, but she is also in the frame for She Loves Me which Stephen Mear is directing at the Chichester Festival Theatre.
