Phill Jupitus has just finished playing King Arthur in the tour of Monty Python’s Spamalot and prior to that was Edna Turnblad in the musical Hairspray both in London and on tour.
He is now to star in the premiere of music hall comedy Big Society! which opens at the newly refurbished City Varieties Music Hall in Leeds on 18th January and runs until 4th February 2012.
The show is set about 100 years ago in the world of music hall and centred on a group of showmen, starlets and ventriloquists. Big Society! invites you to sing along with the assembled conjurers, drunks and suffragettes in a concoction of comedy, class and catchy choruses.
Jupitus is probably best known for his appearances on BBC’s Never Mind the Buzzcocks. In Big Society! he will play George Lightfeather and is joined in the cast by Kyla Goodey, Harry Hamer, Lisa Howard and Dean Nolan.
The musical contains 12 new songs written by Boff Whalley of Chumbawamba, with the band performing in the show.
