John Cleese and his daughter Camilla have written a book for a musical version of the hit movie A Fish Called Wanda and after years of wrangling have just done a deal for the rights with MGM. Work on the long-planned project stopped when the studio went bankrupt last year, but its new owners are much keener on the idea.
The Fawlty Towers/Monty Python star will also be meeting the producer financing the musical in New York next month saying that musicals take an enormously long time to put together: “It’s like the gestation period of an elephant. Someone told me the average is about seven years, so I’m being patient”. Meanwhile he is looking for a director.
