Sondheim’s Assassins at Pleasance Theatre

The musical Assassins with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim and book by John Weidman is being performed at the Pleasance Theatre in Islington from 20th March-8th April.

I went to see this musical at the Donmar Warehouse in 1992 and really recommend  it.  It was directed by Sam Mendes with a cast that included Henry Goodman as Charles Guiteau, Gareth Snook as Lee Harvey Oswald, Anthony Barclay as the Balladeer and Louise Gold as Sara Jane Moore.

Assassins cleverly uses the premise of a murderous carnival game to produce a portrayal of men and women who attempted to assassinate Presidents of the United States from Abraham Lincoln to Ronald Reagan. The music reflects the eras depicted.

The cast includes John Jo Flynn -Balladeer/Lee Harvey Oswald: Paul Burnham – Proprietor: Martin Dickenson – John Wilkes Booth: Alexander Forsyth – Leon Czolgosz: Bronwyn Boys – Sara Jane Moore: Marcia Brown – Lynette Fromme: Bo Frazier – John Hinckley: Padraid Breathnach – Guiseppe Zangara: Tim McArthur – Samuel Byck: Brandon Force – Charles Guiteau and Nova Skipp – Emma Goldman. They will be joined by ensemble members Angela Nesi, Aideen McCartney, Curtis Skinner, David Shorter and Mark Philip Compton.

Directed by Ray Rackham, with musical direction by Joe Bunker, and brand-new orchestral arrangements by David Keefe, this production is not suitable for the under 10s
