A Lionel Bart musical about the hunchback of Notre Dame which he wrote 50 years ago is to be staged for the first time: Quasimodo will have its world premiere at the King's Head Theatre from 20th March - 13th April 2013.
Bart wrote Quasimodo around 1963. It is based on Victor Hugo's 1831 novel Notre Dame de Paris, set in 15th Century Paris and telling the story of the love between the deformed bell ringer and the beautiful gypsy girl Esmeralda.
There was a West End was a workshop for industry insiders in 1995 featuring Frances Ruffelle as Esmeralda and Ray Shell as Quasimodo.
A recording exists with Bart playing the piano as part of the band, but the project never progressed and Bart died four years later.
