On BBC1 tonight at 10:40 pm there looks to be an interesting programme about the influence of Jewish composers on Broadway including the musicals Porgy & Bess, West Side Story and Cabaret.
New York musical theatres
offered a chance for those who had fled persecution and oppression to
make it big in America. Broadway Musicals: A Jewish Legacy features
performances by Broadway's most creative talents, with archive footage and interviews, exploring the work of musical maestros including Irving
Berlin, Jerome Kern, George and Ira Gershwin, Lorenz Hart, Richard
Rodgers, Oscar Hammerstein II, Kurt Weill, Leonard Bernstein, Stephen
Sondheim and Jule Styne.
