The production originally opened on Broadway in 2010 where it was nominated for 12 Tony Awards. The musical uses the paramaters of a minstrel show to tell the story in a very original way.

Directed and choreographed by Susan Stroman the original London production was nominated for 6 Olivier Awards, including Best New Musical and won the Critics' Circle Best Musical 2013 following its run at the Young Vic Theatre.
