It has been confirmed that Michael Longhurst's production of Caroline, or Change is to transfer into the West End opening at the Playhouse Theatre from 20th November to 9th February.
The show, which is currently running at Hampstead Theatre, originally opened at Chichester Festival Theatre starring Sharon D Clarke who will be reprising her role as Caroline Thibodeaux in the West End .
Written by Tony Kushner and composer Jeanine Tesori the musical offers a
pot pourri of music including spirituals, blues, Motown, classical
music, Jewish klezmer and folk. Clarke will play the title character,
who works as a poorly paid maid in 1960's Louisiana for the Gellman family . Set in 1963
with President Kennedy, with the Civil Rights movement and social change
backdrops the show is about a woman who doesn’t like to compromise, in
an era when change is happening very fast.
There was a production at the Lyttelton in October 2006, which ran in repertory with Marianne Elliot's production of Thérèse Raquin to January 2007. The production did not transfer to the West End but won the Olivier Award for Best New Musical.
