Written by Tony Kushner and composer Jeanine Tesori the musical offers a pot pourri of  music including spirituals, blues, Motown, classical music, Jewish klezmer and folk. Clarke will play the title character, who works as a poorly paid maid in 1960's Louisiana for the Gellman family . Set in 1963 with President Kennedy, with the Civil Rights movement and social change backdrops the show is about a woman who doesn’t like to compromise, in an era when change is happening very fast.

There was a  production at the Lyttelton in  October 2006,  which ran in repertory with Marianne Elliot's production of Thérèse Raquin to January 2007. The production did not transfer to the West End but won  the Olivier Award for Best New Musical.
