The Boy Friend announced as Christmas musical at Menier Chocolate Factory

Sandy Wilson's musical The Boy Friend will be revived at the Menier Chocolate Factory over Christmas, running  from 22nd November to 7th  March 2020, with an official opening night on 3rd December. Casting is to be announced.

Wilson's 1953 musical, (described as a love letter to the 1920s), will be directed by Matthew White (She Loves Me, Candide, Sweet Charity, Little Shop of Horrors and The Last Five Years) with choreography and associate direction by Bill Deamer, design by Paul Farnsworth, lighting by Paul Anderson, sound by Gregory Clarke, hair and wig design by Richard Mawbey, musical supervision and direction by Simon Beck and orchestration by David Cullen.

The action  takes place in Madame Dubonnet's finishing school in the south of France, where perfect young ladies burst into song at every opportunity, and forbidden boy friends keep popping through the French windows to sing and dance with them. Since its premiere in 1953, this  show has become one of the most well-loved British musicals of all time.  The show was adapted into a film in 1971 starring Twiggy, who won two Golden Globes.

It  opened in London in 1953, before a West End run in 1954 which lasted for more than 5 years. The subsequent Broadway run in 1954 made a star of  Julie Andrews.
