Very, very sad news that composer Marvin Hamlisch has collapsed and died after a brief illness. He was only 68.
I last saw him with Idina Menzel in London and also in his one man show and loved the music and the man. He won three Oscars, four Grammys, four Emmys, a Tony, a Pulitzer and three Golden Globes.
He composed over forty movie scores including his Oscar-winning score and song for "The Way We Were" and his adaptation of Scott Joplin's music for "The Sting" (for which he received a third Oscar). Other film scores included "Sophie's Choice," "Ordinary People," "The Swimmer," "Three Men and a Baby," "Ice Castles," "Take the Money and Run," Bananas," "Save the Tiger," "The Informant!" and his latest "Behind the Candelabra" which is a film currently being shot about the life of Liberace starring Michael Douglas and Matt Damon.
Mr Hamlisch was Musical Director and arranger of Barbra Streisand’s
1994 concert tour of the US and England as well as of the television
special, Barbra Streisand: The Concert (for which he received two of his Emmys).
On Broadway he wrote the music for "A Chorus Line" which received the Pulitzer Prize, "They're Playing Our Song," "The Goodbye Girl" and "Sweet Smell of Success."
He was due leave for Nashville this week to see his laest hit musical "The Nutty Professor” and was also working on a new Broadway musical "Gotta Dance."
