Lee Mead to appear in Babes in Arms?

Rumour has it that the Rodgers and Hart musical Babes in Arms will star Lee Mead – the Any Dream Will Do winner who turned into the star of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.

The 1937 Broadway classic is being lined up for a West End revival in the New Year. The rarely seen musical was at Chichester Festival Theatre a couple of years ago starring Judy Garland’s daughter Lorna Luft. The supposed London transfer of this production never materialised.

Babes in Arms is set in the glory days of musical theatre with a group of starry eyed young actors from a Cape Cod playhouse decide to transport their show from a barn to Broadway. Some of the classic musical numbers in the show include “The Lady Is a Tramp”, “My Funny Valentine”, “I Wish I were In Love Again” and “Johnny One Note”.

The original film version was released in 1939 starring Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney, directed by Busby Berkeley.

Lee Mead has been involved in several productions since leaving from Joseph earlier this year, including a revival of Jesus Christ Superstar, a stage adaptation of the film "Roman Holiday"  and a musical based on the life of Marc Bolan in  20th Century Boy.
