Sam Mendes wants to direct Willy Wonka in the West End

Roald Dahl's famous book has already been turned into two successful Hollywood movies and Sam Mendes believes the story could be a hit musical on Broadway and in London's West End.

With this in mind the award winning director has commissioned Scottish playwright David Greig to write the script and Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman - the musical minds behind 2007's hit Hairspray - to provide the score.
