Now set in London during the 1940’s Blitz the Chichester revival of Stephen Sondheim’s Sweeney Todd offers award winning performances by Imelda Staunton as pie shop owner Mrs Lovett and Michael Ball as the Demon Barber of Fleet Street.
In my opinion Ball gives the performance of his career being virtually unrecognisable with his trademark curls severely slicked back and a newly grown goatee beard.
This Sweeney Todd is still in previews with Stephen Sondheim suffering from a bad back and not able to get to the show for another 10 days or so. His view (and the critics) will decide whether it transfers to the West End next spring. In my view it will be a great travesty if West End theatregoers are not given the chance to see it.
