There was some discussion/conjecture taking place after the Olivier Awards on Sunday night that the Broadway musical Memphis will open at the Savoy Theatre in London’s West End later this year to fill the gap caused by the postponement of Bridget Jones the Musical. The show had taken out some ads in the Olivier’s programme and rumours are suggesting that ATG is involved.
Memphis was the winner of 2009/2010 Tony Award, Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards for Best Musical. It is still playing on Broadway as well as touring the USA
It is set in the places where rock and roll was born in the 1950s: the seedy nightclubs, radio stations and recording studios of Tennessee. It tells fictional story of DJ Huey Calhoun (a local boy with a passion for R&B music) and Felicia Farrell (an up-and-coming black singer). Despite the objections of their loved ones they embark on a dangerous affair with the relationship challenged by personal ambition and pressures of an outside world unable to accept their love.
