Ian Hughes takes over as Thenadier from injured Matt Lucas in LesMis at Sondheim Theatre

Matt Lucas stepped in to play the role of Thénardier for a few weeks when Gerard Carey was unable to perform before the first preview of the new production of Les Misérables at the Sondheim Theatre last month due to vocal injury caused by  pneumonia.  Last week Lucas  sustained a back injury which means he is unable to continue in the role.  Ian Hughes who recently took over the role of Thénardier in the current  UK and International tour of the show has now joined  the London company  until the end of February when Gerard Carey is expected to return to the role.

Ian Hughes was the first recipient of the Ian Charleson Award for his performance in Torquato Tasso and has appeared in the West End productions of Guys and Dolls at the Savoy Theatre, The Lion King at the Lyceum Theatre and The 39 Steps at the Criterion Theatre.  His many credits for the Royal Shakespeare Company include A Midsummer Night’s Dream, King Lear, The Comedy of Errors, The Winter’s Tale and The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.

Cameron Mackintosh said: “To lose one master of the house is unfortunate and two perhaps careless!  I am delighted to be bringing Ian Hughes to the wonderful London Company to partner Josefina Gabrielle in order that Les Misérables can officially open at the Sondheim Theatre next week as planned. I am sure it will be third time lucky!  I am so grateful to Matt Lucas who abandoned his holiday plans to help us out and am looking forward to welcoming back Gerard to the Company at the end of February.  I wish them both speedy recoveries.

The press night on 16 January at the Sondheim Theatre is confirmed to go ahead.

Ian will be out of the Les Misérables tour during the upcoming 5-week engagement at Theater 11 Zurich and will return to the tour when the production opens in Norwich at the beginning of March. The role of Thénardier for the run in Zurich will be played by Cameron Blakely.

Matt Lucas to step in to play Thénardier in new production of LES MISÉRABLES at the Sondheim Theatre

Matt Lucas is to return to play the role of Thénardier on Monday 23rd December 2019 for six weeks in the new production of LES MISÉRABLES at the newly refurbished Sondheim Theatre in the West End where performances began on Wednesday.

Lucas returns to the part to step in for Gerard Carey who, after strict medical advice, was told on the morning of the first performance on Wednesday that he would be unable to perform during this period in order to completely rest his vocal chords and avoid long-term damage to his voice. Carey is expected to return to the role on Monday 3rd February 2020.

Cameron Mackintosh said: “Just as I was thanking the gods of the theatre for getting the spectacularly rebuilt Sondheim Theatre open on schedule with our brilliant new cast and production, we heard that our irrepressible Thénardier, Gerard Carey, would not be allowed to perform for several weeks due to a serious problem with his vocal chords. Though obviously a disappointment for him and all of us, I’m thrilled to announce that Matt Lucas has volunteered to abandon his Christmas plans and rejoin Les Mis as Master of the House after his recent triumph in the Staged Concert at the Gielgud Theatre. He will play alongside Josefina Gabrielle as Madame Thénardier while Gerard recovers and returns to the company in February.

Multi-Award winning comedian, screenwriter, actor and singer, Matt Lucas, recently reprised the role of Thénardier at the sold-out Les Misérables Staged Concert at the Gielgud Theatre, a role he previously played in the critically-acclaimed West End production Les Misérables at the Queen’s Theatre as well as in the show’s 25th Anniversary Concert at the O2 Arena.  His other theatre credits include Taboo at the Leicester Square Theatre and the touring production of Little Britain Live.  His film credits include Les Misérables Staged Concert, Sherlock Gnomes, Shaun of the Dead, Alice in Wonderland, Alice Through the Looking Glass, Gnomeo and Juliet, Bridesmaids and Paddington. On television his credits include Shooting Stars, Doctor Who, Pompidou, Come Fly with Me and The Wind in the Willows, as well as the BAFTA and Emmy Award-winning television show Little Britain with David Walliams.

Cameron Mackintosh said today "As Les Mis enters its 35th year in London, I am thrilled that we have found a brilliant and exciting cast to open my new production at the Sondheim theatre , many of whom were not even born when the show first opened! I am particularly delighted that Jon Robyns will be leading the company as Jean Valjean. Jon originally played the role of Enjolras when I first produced this new production in 2010. He also starred in Avenue Q for me in the West End and is currently having a huge success as King George in Hamilton at the Victoria Palace. His Inspector Javert will be played by Bradley Jaden, who is currently a sensational Enjolras in the sell out staged Concert version of Les Mis next door at the Gielgud Theatre having previously played Javert to great acclaim at the Queen's. Other current stars of the Concert who will be reprising their show stopping roles at the Sondheim are Carrie Hope Fletcher as Fantine and West End newcomers Shan Ako and Lily Kerhoas as Eponine and Cosette. I am delighted to announce that Rachelle Ann Go, one of the incredible stars of both the Original and current London cast of Hamilton and a previously acclaimed Fantine, will return to this role for 7 weeks in the Spring before taking the role over from Carrie Hope Fletcher next Summer. The irresistibly grasping Thénardiers will be in the hilarious hands of Gerard Carey and Josefina Gabrielle. I last worked with Gerard when he portrayed the scene stealing photographer in my recent production of Half a Sixpence and Josefina who starred in my productions of Carousel, Witches of Eastwick and Oklahoma! opposite Hugh Jackman. Though our search for Marius continues, it's terrific to be reunited with Ashley Gilmour as Enjolras - after his recent success playing Chris in my international tour of Miss Saigon. It is a testament to Víctor Hugo's timeless masterpiece and Boublil & Schönberg's brilliant musical adaptation that Les Misérables continues to attract such stellar talent to the world's longest running musical."

Jon Robyns is playing King George in Hamilton at the Victoria Palace Theatre. His many other credits include creating the roles of Princeton and Rod in  Avenue Q. Les Miserables to move from Queens Theatre to allow for structural improvements

Les Misérables is to move from its current home at the Queens' Theatre  to make way for  renovations as part of a range of structural improvements and restoration work in several Cameron Mackintosh's theatres
Following the restoration of the Victoria Palace Theatre for the opening of Hamilton, Wyndham's, Noël Coward, Gielgud, the Novello and the Queen's Theatre will all undergo improvement works.

Work to Wyndham's, Noël Coward and the Gielgud will take place during breaks of the shows already running at the theatres.

The Queen's Theatre will also close without LesMis breaking its run. The works come after historic plaster and paintwork conservationist Richard Ireland and structural engineer Chris Boydell of Connisbee inspected the buildings: it requires major renovation backstage and the closure will allow the restoration of   Edwardian architect William Sprague's  original boxes and loges.

In a statement, the company said: "Plans are being finalised to ensure that this legendary musical success will continue its run in the West End during the Queen's Theatre closure and announcement with these arrangements will be made in the autumn."

The first of the theatres to undergo improvements will be Wyndham's, starting early next month. Then the Noël Coward and Gielgud will follow in 2019, with works to the Queen's taking  a period of two to four months in 2019-20.

The Novello Theatre has already had over 50% of the required work completed and the remainder will be carried out without any loss of performance.

Mackintosh said: "Having just completed the hugely rewarding but very expensive restoration of the Victoria Palace, news of the timing of these works which are necessary to ensure that my other theatres will be in tip top condition for actors, producers and audiences, long after the final curtain has dropped on me, was not the most welcome. There are major financial consequences, not just the considerable cost of the capital works, but the knock on costs of closing these theatres for several months will run into many millions of pounds. However, I love these buildings and luckily my success as a producer has given me the resources to preserve their life for another 100 years - so that the show can go on and on and on!"

JUST ANNOUNCED: New Les Miserables Tour of UK and Ireland

After nearly a decade since the last UK tour, Cameron Mackintosh has announced that his  Broadway production of Boublil and Schönberg’s musical LES MISÉRABLES is to go on tour at the end of this year opening  at the Curve Leicester on 3rd November 2018 (press night 14 November 2018 ), before playing the Bord Gais Energy Theatre, Dublin, Festival Theatre Edinburgh and Manchester Palace Theatre. Further dates and casting news to follow.

Cameron Mackintosh said, Since I first conceived the new production of “Les Misérables” to celebrate the shows 25th anniversary in 2009, this production has taken the world by storm - more than matching the success of the original, which can now only be seen in London.  I am thrilled that modern audiences have embraced this production as Les Mis for the 21st century and it is playing to packed houses all over the world in many languages. It also inspired the hugely successful movie version starring Hugh Jackman, Anne Hathaway and Eddie Redmayne. This latest version comes  from its recent Broadway triumph (now once again on a sell-out tour of North America) and is even more spectacular than the original.  I am very proud that this extraordinary Boublil and Schönberg musical remains as fresh, thrilling and exciting as ever – and people are still storming the barricades for a ticket.
This  new staging has scenery inspired by the paintings of Victor Hugo, and has been seen in North America, South America, Korea, Japan, Canada, Australia, Spain, France, Manila, Singapore, Dubai and Broadway.
