Darius Campbell (formerly Danesh) last appeared in London’s West playing Rhett Butler (pictured) in Trevor Nunn's ill-fated musical Gone with the Wind. He is now moving on to opera singing the lead role of Escamillo in Bizet's Carmen at the O2 Arena next month. Ironically the role is described as “A handsome toreador, Escamillo is aware of his own good looks and knows how women are attracted to him”. He also gets to sing “the Toreador Song” which won fame quite a few years ago as a jingle advertising Esso.
He recently won the reality series Popstar To Operastar (during which he sang an aria from Carmen) and will perform on the final night of a three-night run at the O2 from 21st to 23rd May 2010.
After coming to public attention as a contestant on early reality TV shows Pop Stars and Pop Idol, Darius made his West End debut in 2005 playing Billy Flynn in Chicago and then went on to play Sky Masterson in Michael Grandage’s tour of Guys and Dolls.
