Sheridan Smith appearing in Chekhov Shorts on Sky Arts 2

Sheridan Smith is currently playing Elle Woods in Legally Blonde at the Savoy Theatre and also in the process of making a film called Hysteria alongside Maggie Gyllenhaal and Rupert Everett.

She is well known for her appearances in light-hearted shows on TV and in the West End, but has recently taken on the role of a character crafted by Russian playwright Anton Chekhov who is real literary heavyweight.

She will play the fiancĂ©e of Gavin and Stacey's Mathew Horne in The Proposal which is about Sheridan’s character Natasha being proposed to by hypochondriac Lomov and angering his would-be father-in-law, played by Philip Jackson. Her part in the Chekhov series marks what would have been his 150th birthday.

The Proposal is one of four one-act plays to be shown on Sky Arts this month as part of Chekhov: Comedy Shorts. The other three plays, regarded as some of Chekhov's finest work, will see performances from Steve Coogan, Julian Barrett and Johnny Vegas.

The Proposal starring Sheridan Smith will be shown on Sky Arts 2 HD on Sunday November 28th at 9:00 pm

Really enjoyed The Proposal - brilliant acting by Sheridan, who was perfectly cast as the daughter. I understand that she recorded this play, in between matinee and evening performances of Legally Blonde! She really is such a versatile, convincing actress, and makes all her characters so believable. (I remember Sheridan with dark hair when she appeared as Cinderella Doe in Lark Rise to Candleford.) Also, excellent portayal of their respective characters, by Matt Horne and Philip Jackson. A very funny and entertaining play. Well done to all involved in the production of these Chekhov plays.

I watched it too and have to say I thought Sheridan was inspired casting. She is certainly a versatile actress.

She's just finished filming Hysteria and I look forward to seeing her in that when it's released in cinemas some time next year.
