Broadway musical Amelie to premiere in UK next spring

The Broadway musical based on the hit film Amélie will have its UK premiere in 2019 opening at the Watermill Theatre in Newbury in  April before heading off on tour across the UK from  May, When UK tour ends  in August 2019, the plan is to tour it internationally. Tickets for Amélie go on sale at 10:00 am on Tuesday 30 October.

A Watermill Theatre production in association with Hartshorn–Hook productions, Selladoor Worldwide and Asia Broadway Company, Michael Fentiman (The Importance of Being Earnest) will direct. He said, As a theatre maker, staging Amélie as a musical is one of those exciting, terrifying challenges, that you absolutely cannot turn down. It is a gentle, magical and uncynically joyous piece - that takes its audience on a surreal flight of fancy, into the mind of an extraordinary young woman, Amélie Poulain. It's going to be a huge pleasure to open the show at the beautiful Watermill Theatre before then taking our extremely talented actor musician cast around the UK.  Star casting and the creative team for the show is still to be announced.

The musical has music by Daniel Messé, lyrics by Messé and Nathan Tysen and a book by Craig Lucas. It first opened  at the Berkeley Rep Theatre in September 2015 starring Samantha Barks (Les Misérables, Pretty Woman) before running on Broadway in 2017 starring Phillipa Soo (Hamilton).

Amelie the Musical  is based on the 2001 romantic comedy film by Jean-Pierre Jeunet, which won two BAFTA Awards telling the story of Amélie, an imaginative dreamer who lives in Paris.  She is  an extraordinary young woman who lives quietly in the world but loudly in her mind improvising  small but surprising acts of kindness that bring joy and mayhem. But when a chance at love comes her way, she  realizes that to find happiness she’ll have to risk everything and say what’s in her heart.  By finding her voice, she discovers the power of connection, finding possibilities  around every corner.

Our current company of “Swan Lake” features 29 young dancers making their debuts with us, many of those have come through our Company initiatives such as “Swan School”, “A Summer Adventure” and of course, our production of “Lord of the Flies” which inspired so many young men to seek careers in dance. This time we are focusing on nurturing young male and female dancers, and I have been overwhelmed by the talent that we have had to choose from throughout the UK. I’m particularly happy to be working alongside my Young Associate Choreographer, Arielle Smith, an exceptional young dancemaker of great maturity and vision. In turn, after 30 years as a professional choreographer, I look forward to being refreshed and inspired by what this team of young artists will bring to Shakespeare’s classic tale of tragic conflict and young love”.
